As the season turns, homes and businesses are preparing for the onslaught of energy bills as air conditioning and fans become a necessity.

The US Department of Energy offers some energy saving tips for spring and summer. It explains that windows can be used to keep cool air inside while protecting a room from exterior heat. The website says:

  • If you live in a climate where it cools off at night, turn off your cooling system and open your windows while sleeping. When you wake in the morning, shut the windows and blinds to capture the cool air.

Energy Conservation During Winter Months

Winter months have many cozy aspects, but with the added warmth come higher energy costs. Energy.gov offers several tips to conserve energy and money despite the chill:

  1. Seal and insulate your home
  2. Use a programmable thermostat
  3. Install ENERGY STAR doors and windows
  4. Use LED holiday lights
  5. Turn off the lights
  6. Use lighting controls
  7. Lower the water heater
  8. Unplug electronics
  9. Use a power strip
  10. Adjust the blinds and curtains
